Scorers: ÇalhanoÄŸlu 43′; McTominay 23′
Sitting second and first in the Serie A table, this would always be a dramatic clash defined by margins at San Siro.
Inter led from the first whistle, but Napoli’s quick thinking opened the scoring against the run of play.
Following a corner, Amir Rrahmani flicked the ball toward Scott McTominay, who acted like a true poacher and stabbed home from point-blank range. It was his third goal for the club.
But one of Inter’s stars then took it upon himself to ensure things turned 1-1 by the break. Hakan ÇalhanoÄŸlu picked up the ball from 25 yards out and smashed it home as the stadium erupted.
After the break, Inter’s momentum carried over, and Napoli had to hold their breath.
Federico Dimarco almost turned things in favour of the hosts but hit the right post. Romelu Lukaku and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, meanwhile, were fairly lacklustre.
A defensive slip from André-Frank Zambo Anguissa then handed Çalhanoğlu the chance to wrap up the match from the penalty spot.
But he sent the ball off the post to miss his first Inter penalty on his 20th attempt.
That missed chance would come to haunt Simone Inzaghi’s men, but Antonio Conte will surely be happy to split the points.
Substitute Giovanni Simeone almost stole all three points at the death for the visitors but he skied his effort in the dying seconds.
Napoli maintains the top spot by the skin of their teeth with a one-point lead.
