An 18-year-old man was killed and two others were taken to hospital in a collision Monday on Glenmore Trail S.W., west of the Crowchild Trail junction.
Police said in a release that they responded to reports of the serious collision around 9:45 p.m.
Investigators believe a BMW Coupe driven by a 19-year-old man with two passengers, an 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old man, was travelling east on Glenmore Trail when it failed to negotiate a bend in the road.
The BMW then entered the right shoulder of the road, ultimately hitting a stationary crane.
The crane, operated by a man in his 30s, had broken down and the operator was trying to repair it on the side of the road when the car collided with it.
The driver of the BMW was seriously hurt and taken to hospital, while the 18-year-old passenger was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition where he later died of his injuries.
The 21-year-old passenger was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The crane operator was uninjured.
Excessive speed and alcohol are believed to be possible factors in the collision and charges against the driver are pending, police say.
The incident remains under investigation, and anyone who witnessed the collision or may have footage from the area at the time of the incident is asked to contact police.
