Welcome to the new year.
Though 2025 has just begun, calendars are already being marked with holiday observances.
The Office of Personnel Management lists 12 federal holidays across 11 days. The mismatch arises as Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day both fall on Jan. 20.
Federal holidays cause federal offices to close along with banks and financial markets.
Not included in the OPM list is the day of mourning on Jan. 9 called by President Joe Biden in the wake of former President Jimmy Carter’s death.
Other holidays on the calendar to be celebrated include Easter, Hanukkah and Ramadan.

Friday, July 4: Independence Day
Monday, Sept. 1: Labor Day
Monday, Oct. 13: Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Thursday, Dec. 25: Christmas Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day occurs on Monday, Jan. 20.
Inauguration Day coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20.
Ramadan is expected to begin on Friday, Feb. 28 or Saturday, March 1, depending on the sighting of the moon.
Easter is celebrated on Sunday, April 20.
Memorial Day is on Monday, May 26.
Juneteenth falls on Thursday, June 19.
Labor Day occurs on Monday, Sept. 1.
Veteran’s Day is on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
Thanksgiving Day takes place on Thursday, Nov. 27.
Hanukkah begins at sunset on Sunday, Dec. 14.
