A family physician who operated out of a clinic in northwest Calgary has been charged with four counts of sexual assault, Calgary police said Tuesday.

Police said they conducted a lengthy investigation and charged Phu Truong Vu, 46, with sexually assaulting patients.

All four victims attended the Brentwood Medical Clinic between 2016 and 2020, when Vu was employed as a general practitioner, according to a police release.

Each victim reported being sexually assaulted in an examination room “when the doctor performed non-consensual sexual acts during their medical examinations.”

Cassie Pang, a spokesperson for the Calgary Police Service, said one victim initially came forward in 2023 to report they had been sexually assaulted by Vu.

Police reports were filled independently by three other victims, who had previously filed complaints to the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta

“We’re not sure if [the college] then directed them to us or if the victims reported on their own volition,” said Pang.

According to separate releases from the college, Vu was suspended from practice on Aug. 29, 2022, after a hearing tribunal “found that his conduct constitutes ‘sexual abuse’ as defined in the Health Professions Act.”

In 2024, the collage cancelled Vu’s permit to practise medicine in Alberta, and ordered him to pay a lump sum of $10,000.

Pang said the charges against Vu announced on Tuesday mark the first time he has been charged criminally.

Vu will next appear in court on Dec. 3.
