London Drugs, a well-known retail and pharmacy chain, became a victim of a cybersecurity incident, resulting in the closure of its stores across Western Canada on Sunday. The company, headquartered in British Columbia, took this step as a precautionary measure upon discovering the cybersecurity attack.
However, the company assured the public that there is currently no indication of any impact on customer or employee data. “At this time, we have no reason to believe that customer or employee data has been impacted,” the company said in a statement.
Despite the closure until further notice, London Drugs stated that pharmacists remain available to assist customers with urgent pharmacy needs. They urged individuals requiring assistance to contact their local pharmacy for arrangements. “Pharmacists are standing by to support any customers with urgent pharmacy needs,” the statement further read, said a CBC report.
The announcement of the store closures was confirmed by London Drugs on X (formerly Twitter), later confirmed via a post on Facebook. London Drugs stressed that this closure is temporary and not permanent.
Initially, the company attributed the closures to an ‘operational issue’. Staff at a location in Kamloops, B.C., said that they were experiencing a ‘computer issue,’ preventing them from assisting customers.
In response to the incident, London Drugs has enlisted the support of third-party experts to contain, rectify, and investigate the matter thoroughly. London Drugs operates nearly 80 stores across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, with a significant portion of them located in British Columbia.
