Team Canada shut out Latvia 4-0 in the quarterfinals on Thursday to advance to the next round at the World Men’s U18 Hockey Championship.

Canadian goaltender Carter George made 23 saves and forward Gavin McKenna tied the Canadian record for scoring in the tournament with 15 points with an assist in the victory. Tij Iginla and Harrison Brunicke added two assists apiece.

McKenna, who’s just 16 years old, is second in tournament-scoring with teammate Porter Martone right behind him in third with 14 points.

Red Deer Rebels forward Ollie Josephson didn’t record a point on Thursday but has two assists so far in the tournament.

Forward Maxim Masse found the back of the net on the powerplay for Canada just over five minutes into the game and over seven minutes later forward Ryder Ritchie extended Canada’s lead.

After a scoreless second period, Martone scored off an assist from Caleb Desnoyers followed by an empty net goal from Jett Luchanko.

Canada will now face Sweden in the semifinals on Saturday in a rematch from last year’s tournament. A year ago, Sweden defeated Canada 7-2 in the semifinals in Switzerland.

This time around, Sweden took down Finland 2-1 in the quarterfinals. In the other semifinal, the defending champion Americans will go up against Slovakia.
