Pittsburgh Penguins forward Michael Bunting was selected to Canada’s roster for the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) World Championship tournament.
Hockey Canada announced its roster via a release Friday.
A native of Scarborough, Ontario, Bunting joined the Penguins late in the 2023-24 season as the primary return in a blockbuster trade that sent forward Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes on March 7.
Appearing in 21 games with the Penguins, Bunting scored 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) and averaged 17:19 of ice time while primarily being deployed on the left wing of the second line as well as in the slot on the top power-play unit.
Including his time with the Hurricanes, the 28-year-old Bunting played in 81 games during the 2023-24 campaign and posted 55 points (19 goals, 36 assists) and clocked an average of 15:43 of ice time.
Bunting previously played for Canada in the 2021 IIHF World Championship tournament, winning a gold medal.
Former Penguins forwards Jared McCann and Brandon Tanev, as well as defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, were also named to Canada’s roster.
The IIHF World Championship tournament is slated to be held in Czechia between May 10 and 26.
Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas is serving as an associate general manager for Canada.
Several members of the Penguins are committed to participate (or are in positions to potentially do so) in the tournament:
• Defensemen Erik Karlsson and Marcus Pettersson were named to Sweden’s roster.
• Forwards Jesse Puljuarvi and Valtteri Puustinen are playing for Finland in the Euro Hockey Tour tournament, a preliminary event for participating teams to finalize their rosters going into the IIHF World Championship tournament.
• Forward Radim Zohorna was named to Czechia’s roster for the Euro Hockey Tour tournament, as well.
• Assistant coach Ty Hennes was named to the United States’ staff in an identical capacity.
