American tennis sensation Ben Shelton is set to represent Team World for the second time at the seventh edition of the Laver Cup, taking place at Uber Arena in Berlin from September 20-22, 2024. The world-ranked No. 14 will join No. 9 Alex de Minaur, No. 12 Tommy Paul, and No. 13 Taylor Fritz on Captain John McEnroe’s team, with two roster positions yet to be filled.
Shelton, who reached the US Open semifinals in 2023, made a stunning debut at Laver Cup Vancouver, winning three matches for the victorious Team World. His victories included an opening singles match against Arthur Fils and two doubles matches, partnering with Felix Auger-Aliassime and Frances Tiafoe.
“Ben thrives in a team environment and relishes the big stage,” said McEnroe, who is hunting a third consecutive Laver Cup title. “He brings incredible energy to the team and is a threat in both singles and doubles with a massive serve and fierce will to win.”
Shelton’s meteoric rise in the ATP rankings began last year when he reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in his first Grand Slam main draw appearance. He continued to make headlines with an impressive run to the US Open semifinals and won his first ATP Tour singles title at the Japan Open in 2023, followed by a second title in Houston in April this year.
“I’m thrilled to be back on Team World,” said Shelton. “Playing Laver Cup was one of my highlights last year, and I can’t wait to team up with the guys in Berlin and defend the Cup.”
Team Europe Captain Bjorn Borg has named Roland Garros 2024 champion Carlos Alcaraz and runner-up Alexander Zverev, along with former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev and 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, to his team.
“These players excel as teammates and know what it takes to get us over the line,” McEnroe noted. Team Europe won the first four editions of the Laver Cup, but Team World has claimed victory in the last two tournaments, setting the stage for an exciting competition in Berlin.
