A 48-year-old basketball coach who has been coaching in Edmonton since 2015 has been charged after police allege he sexually assaulted a teenage player.
The Edmonton Police Service says a 16-year-old girl filed a sexual assault complaint last month against her basketball coach.
She says it happened early this year at a hotel during a basketball development camp outside Edmonton.
Police were told the coach encouraged the teenager to consume alcohol and hallucinogenic drugs.
“Once intoxicated, he sexually assaulted the complainant,” EPS allege in a news release.
Ronald William Olson, 48, was charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation, administering a noxious thing and possession of a controlled drug. He has since been released, pending several conditions, including not having contact with anyone under the age of 16.
He is scheduled to appear in an Edmonton court on Wednesday. Police believe there may be more complainants.
