Bengaluru: Children living in and around Panathur and Balagere spend most of their non-school hours in vehicles stuck in endless jams on their way to and from school, social media users lamented on Thursday. It was day 1 of the railways’ widening and maintenance works at the underpass on Panathur main road. While motorists have been struggling with bumper-to- bumper crawl on Panathur main road for months now, things worsened further on Thursday. The work is expected to go on for three more days.Within hours of daybreak, locals felt the pinch of infrastructure works. Namma Balagere, a citizens’ group, took to X around 8.50am and posted: “Kids started from Sobha Dream Acres at 7.15am and are still stuck at Panathur Balagere S Cross. Just travelled hardly 1.5 km in 1 hour. When will pending widening work be completed?” The post triggered a flood of replies. “School change maadi, area change maadi. I pity the kids in such congested, poor infra areas, where the quality of the childhood is compromised! Kids need time to play, rest, study. Not spend in vehicles for hours. Kids need space, fresh air to breathe,” responded a netizen, posting from the handle aashrith_v.DCP (Traffic-East) Kuldeep Kumar Jain said that the railway department had chosen to take up two works at a time — widening of the underpass and the maintenance job. The work will go on for three days from Thursday. “We have deployed at least 10 traffic policemen to ease congestion during peak hours. However, traffic will be moving slowly due to maintenance work and the job of widening the underpass,” he said.
