Serena Williams brought the curtain down on her illustrious career after a third-round loss at the 2022 US Open, but the 23-time Grand Slam champion has not ruled out a return to the sport
Serena Williams has refused to rule out an astonishing return to tennis, two years after she retired at the US Open.
The 42-year-old superstar, who won 23 Grand Slam titles, bid a tearful farewell to the sport during the 2022 competition at Flushing Meadows, when she was defeated by Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round. Nowadays, Williams is trying to adjust to life without the sport she has been playing since the age of four years old.
Adapting to life away from the court has proven to be a challenge, particularly when the likes of Wimbledon, the US Open or the other Grand Slams are in motion. Williams admitted she had to recently turn Wimbledon off on her television as she has been missing the sport so much.
Considering her recent comments in an interview, Williams admitted that she refuses to completely rule out a return to the sport. In an intriguing chat with Vanity Fair, when asked if she has been able to watch Wimbledon, Williams said: “Oh my God. I just can’t right now.
“I miss it. I think that’s normal. It’s normal to miss something that you’ve done since the day you were born.” When asked about the idea of coming back to the sport, she said: “I think as long as I’m healthy, that’s always going to be in the back of my mind. I stay fit. I stay healthy. When I’m watching, it’s like, ‘Okay, well, you could be out there too.'”
Williams ended her illustrious career as the best female tennis player of all time. Away from the sport, she has found a new calling as a mother. Before she retired, Williams gave birth to her daughter Olympia.
Since she walked away from the sport, Williams and her husband, co-founder of Reddit Alexis Ohanian, had their second child Adira. Now she is spending plenty of time volunteering at her daughter’s school.
In an interview with Today, she said: “As a mom, I’m actually way more active than what I was during tennis. Obviously, (with) tennis, I was playing Wimbledon and stuff. But, as a mom, I’m gone all day. I’m really competitive about it, too. I sign my name up whenever I can, whenever there’s a spot open.”
