Google and Apple have launched a new tool to simplify the process of moving your media from Google Photos to iCloud. This direct transfer method eliminates the need for manual downloads and uploads, saving time and data. Here’s how to use this new feature:
1. Ensure you have sufficient iCloud storageBefore initiating the transfer, check your available iCloud storage. You’ll need enough space to accommodate your Google Photos library. If necessary, upgrade your iCloud storage plan.

The transfer time varies depending on the size of your library, ranging from several hours to a few days. Apple will send email notifications to your Apple ID-associated email addresses when the transfer begins and completes.
Things to note
- The transfer doesn’t delete photos from Google Photos; it creates copies in iCloud.
- Supported file types include JPEG, HEIC, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, MP4, and MOV.
- Unsupported files (e.g., RAW files) will be transferred to iCloud Drive instead.
- Transferred photos and videos will appear in an album called “Import from Google” in the Photos app.
If you encounter any issues or missing files after the transfer, check your iCloud Drive for a folder named “Import from Google” with the transfer date.
