Alexander Zverev issued an update on his fitness ahead of commencing his Canadian Open campaign.
The German was unsuccessful in the defence of his Olympic title but there is little time to dwell on it as he is now in Montreal ready to commence his road to the US Open.
Zverev has enjoyed a mixed run of results in recent times, such as reaching the French Open final and not making it past the fourth round of Wimbledon.
But despite not being at 100%, the 27-year-old will battle for the chance to win the Canadian Open title for the second time.
Alexander Zverev held a press conference with reporters in which he said he had been battling illness.
Like his fellow competitors that played in the Olympic Games on clay, he now faces a swift transition to the hard courts. While it will not be easy, especially given his health, Zverev is ready for the challenge.
“I’m a bit sick as you can hear but that’s okay. I have taken three days off now since Paris where I did absolutely nothing,” Zverev told reporters. “I didn’t leave my apartment for three days. So that did me some good, it really did, and it helped me.
“The transition is never easy from surface to surface, especially the movement and finding the rhythm of the ball. I am someone who likes to hit a lot of tennis balls, so hopefully I can find it quicker than other players.
“Also, just the travelling time difference. A lot of things come into consideration. But I still have a few days and hopefully I will find my rhythm.”
Zverev will enter the 2024 Canadian Open looking to win the title for the second time in his career.
He claimed the championship for the first time back in 2017, when he was just 20 years of age and still coming up the ranks on the ATP Tour.
After taking three sets to beat Richard Gasquet in the opening round, Zverev, unseeded at the time, stormed to the title without dropping another set.
He defeated Nick Kyrgios, Kevin Anderson and Denis Shapovalov before taking out Roger Federer in the final to claim what was his second Masters 1000 title.
