Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese’s incredible WNBA record double-double streak has ended at 15 games after she posted eight points and 16 rebounds in an 81-67 home loss to the New York Liberty on Saturday afternoon.
The Liberty seemed to make sure Reese fell one basket short of her double-double, defending her with four players in the final seconds:
Reese dominated the boards but struggled shooting, making 3-of-13 field goals. Still, fans understandably lauded her remarkable accomplishment.
During the streak, Reese averaged 14.8 points on 42.2 percent shooting, 13.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. Her scoring high was 27 points in an 88-84 road win over the Seattle Storm. Her rebounding high was 19 boards in an 85-77 road win over the Atlanta Dream.
Now that streak is over, though. What’s of most importance is the Sky’s fight for the playoffs. Currently, Chicago is 9-14, good enough for eighth in the WNBA standings and the last spot in the current playoff picture.
There’s still 17 regular-season games left for Chicago, though, beginning Tuesday against the Las Vegas Aces. That will signal the end of the de-facto first half of the season with the Olympic break now upon us.
