Pedri’s role under Hansi Flick has been completely different from the previous version of the player that initially impressed in Catalonia.
The youngster now plays a deeper role for the Blaugrana, as part of the defensive pivot, but still continues to be equally important and impressive week in and week out.
The Spanish international is currently on duty with La Roja and made an appearance off the bench in the team’s most recent game. He will once again feature tonight against Switzerland, possibly as a starter.
Speaking to the media recently, the Barcelona midfielder reacted to topics including his start to the season, the hectic schedule and bonding with teammates amongst others.
He began by revealing his happiness playing for the two institutions that he does. “I feel very good with Barca and the Spanish NT.”
Speaking on the hectic schedule this season, especially with a new UCL format and continuous international action, he said,
“Too many matches? Yes, there are a lot of matches, but you have to find what helps your body recover, and I found what helps mine.”
The Canary Islander then reflected on Hansi Flick’s ideology of defending from the front and how it made sense in today’s game.
“I think that in football today if all 11 players work together, it’s much easier to defend. I believe we all make an effort, and it shows.”
“We recover the ball quickly and more often than the opponent, and from there, it becomes easier to win.”
Pedri also reflected on his own game and the changes that have come in his quality and skillset over the past year.
“There have been good changes for me, I have found the continuity that I was missing and I am very happy with this start to the season.”
Pedri and Dani Olmo were initially thought to be competing for the same position on the field until Flick made it clear with his tactics how they could coexist. Speaking on his connection with Olmo and whether he wished to play more with him for Spain, he said,
“Yes, now I am lucky enough to be with him at Barcelona and we understand each other very well, but it is the coach’s decision and I have nothing to do.”
Finally, the player gave a much-needed update on his contract renewal status with Barcelona.
“My renewal Barça? I’m calm, everything is fine,” he noted.
