BCA to start women cricket tourneys; T20 format likely – Times of India
Vadodara: It was one of the first cities in the country to have a separate women’s cricket association way back in 1970s. But the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) didn’t have a women’s professional cricket tournament of its own despite producing talented cricketers. The association, though, is set to have a women’s cricket tourney from this year.BCA’s cricket advisory committee (CAC) chairman Kiran More said that the BCA will start organizing women’s cricket tournament to promote talented players. “Women’s cricket has become immensely popular now and the number of girls joining the sport is on the rise. Vadodara has a lot of talent and it’s time that it should be tapped,” More told TOI.“We had been mulling to launch a women’s cricket tournament for quite some time. Organizing this tournament regularly will give good practice to the players who will be able to showcase their talent. The more they play, the more their confidence and skills will improve,” More said. Though the association is yet to plan the nitty-gritty of the tournament, it may opt for the T20 format. Earlier, the BCA even played boys versus girls matches in junior cricket. BCA officials said that their idea is to prepare women cricketers for the national side. The Indian women’s cricket team already has two cricketers – Yastika Bhatia and Radha Yadav – from the city. “BCA has veteran women cricketers who can offer quality coaching and we also have enough grounds. It is high time a professional cricket tournament is organized. We will be able to tap the talent from district areas too,” said a BCA official.
