Nearly seven years since last representing his native Canada, Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid is ready for his latest opportunity.
McDavid will be among the stars to watch when Canada faces Sweden in the 4 Nations Face-Off opener tonight in Montreal. It is McDavid’s first international involvement for Canada since the 2018 IIHF World Championship.
The 28-year-old has registered 71 points in the NHL this season, tied for the fourth most, and has helped the Oilers to 72 points, tied for third most in the league standings. With NHL play on hold for nearly two weeks, McDavid is focused on the opportunity to bring home silverware with Canada.
“I’m excited,” McDavid said yesterday. “Ultimately, we’ve been waiting for this for a long time. Lots of buildup, lots of hype for a while. Now it’s time to go play. That’s what I do.”
Fellow Canadian star Sidney Crosby is also on the roster and believes McDavid has handled pressure well in his career.
“I think if anything, he’s probably just excited,” Crosby said. “It’s been a long time and he’s probably grateful for the opportunity to finally play for Canada in something like this.
“He’s seems to deal with pressure,” Crosby added. “He’s been in big situations going back to last year and the (playoff) run that they had. He’s had lots of opportunities to play on big stages and handled it pretty well.”
