Canada is on a quest to defend its gold medal at the IIHF World Championship — and the nation is sending one of its most talented rosters in recent history.
While the main focus in the hockey world may be on the Stanley Cup Playoffs, there is another international tournament kicking off over in Europe. The 2024 IIHF World Championship is taking place the next two weeks in Czechia, with 16 countries competing for the right to be named a world champion.
The nation sporting the maple leaf enters this year’s competition as the reigning champions. Canada defeated Germany last year in the gold medal game, taking home its second gold in three years.

This year, it’s a roster chock-full of NHL talent, including Blackhawks rookie sensation Connor Bedard, Maple Leafs captain John Tavares, King center Pierre-Luc Dubois and Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram.

Canada is set to play, at the very minimum, seven preliminary-round games at the 2024 IIHF World Championship. The top four teams from each group advance to the knockout stage, where it is single elimination.
The defending gold medalists are in a group with Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain, Norway and Switzerland.
