Cardiff City manager Omer Riza believes James Durkin was overawed by his elevation from fourth official to referee as he sent off Callum Robinson against Coventry City.
Republic of Ireland forward Robinson was dismissed early in the second half of the 1-1 draw on New Year’s Day after catching Bobby Thomas with his elbow as they jostled for a header.
Cardiff’s players, coaches and fans were furious with the decision by Durkin, who had started the game as fourth official but had to replace injured referee Geoff Eltringham during the first half.
Riza said the Bluebirds will be appealing against the red card for Robinson, who is their top scorer this season with eight goals.
“If anyone thinks that’s a red card then I’m a monkey’s uncle,” said Riza.
“The arm is up, he has caught him, yellow card, yes. No malice in it at all. All due respect to the referee, it’s his first Championship game.
“The moment maybe got to him and he wanted to make a big call and it was the wrong one. It’s something we have to deal with.”
The draw left Cardiff second from bottom of the Championship table, one point adrift of safety.
A red card for violent conduct would usually carry a three-match suspension, so the Bluebirds will be hoping Robinson’s dismissal will be overturned.
The former Sheffield United forward had scored three goals in his previous two appearances, including a double during last Sunday’s win over Watford, Cardiff’s first victory in 10 attempts.
“I spoke to the referees and told them what I told you [media]. I don’t hide anything. I spoke honestly and respectfully,” Riza added.
“The referee thought he saw it, when he looks back I think he’ll look at it differently. I am hoping that will get overturned. I would like to appeal it.”
