Alejandro Tabilo defeated world No 1 Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-3 to reach the fourth round of the Rome Masters 1000.
“Just being able to beat Novak today, him being No 1 in the world, it’s surreal right now,” he said afterwards. “Just got to keep working, trying to stay with this momentum, with this confidence, try to finish off the year in top form.”
Alejandro Tabilo was born in Toronto to parents Ricardo and Maria, who are both Chilean but met while living in Canada. He explained in Rome: “I was born in Toronto. I moved to the United States when I was 13. When I was around 18, I moved to Santiago. There basically my whole journey started there with a new team.”

Alejandro Tabilo speaks English and Spanish, and according to the ATP, he says his English is better than his Spanish, having grown up in English-speaking countries.

Alejandro Tabilo grew up watching Chilean tennis stars on YouTube. He told reporters in Rome: “They were very, very important with my family. I remember always from a young age watching Massu, Gonzalez, my dad showing me YouTube videos of Rios. It helped me from a young age.
“Now when I started living in Chile, got to know better Gonzalez and Massu, they’ve always been very helpful, always been there watching my matches, giving me tips, especially Massu who is Davis Cup captain. He’s always very into watching us and how we’re developing.”
Tabilo achieved a career-high ranking of world No 32 after reaching the final of Santiago in May 2024, but he will rise higher following the conclusion of Rome.
“This year I’ve been climbing the rankings. I’ve been playing with these higher-ranked players, the top 10s, top 20s. Been struggling there a little bit trying to get a win,” he admitted after beating Djokovic.
Alejandro Tabilo has won one title on the ATP tour, in Auckland in 2024.
He has also reached two finals, one in Santiago in 2024, and one in Cordoba, in 2022.
