FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball soars north to Canada for the inaugural Atlantic Slam, taking on Georgetown and Cincinnati on Prince Edward Island.
FGCU will be facing both the Hoyas (Big East) and the Bearcats (Big XII) for the first time in program history this weekend. The Eagles battle Georgetown (2-1) on Saturday at 5 p.m. and then square off against Cincinnati (3-1) in less than 24 hours Sunday at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
FGCU (1-2) checked in at No. 7 overall in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. The Eagles are 7-3 all-time when facing teams from the Big XII Conference, which includes FGCU’s first NCAA Tournament victory in 2015 when the seventh-seeded Eagles defeated 10-seed Oklahoma State 75-67 to advance to the Round of 32. Now first-year head coach Chelsea Lyles was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the time in her fifth year on the staff. Against the Big East, the Green and Blue is 4-3 against current members.
The Eagles avoided their first 0-3 start in program history last Sunday, defeating NJIT 73-53 in the home opener for the first win of the season and of the Lyles era. Lyles is currently one of only two coaches in Division I women’s basketball to hold a perfect career win percentage, joining Jan Jensen from Iowa at 5-0.
The Green and Blue brought the offensive cohesiveness from the opening tip, scoring the first basket of the contest en route to 28 points in the first quarter. Maddie Antenucci drained four of the Eagles’ season-high eight 3-pointers, finishing with 13 points. FGCU is averaging 5.7 made 3-pointers per game this season, while the Eagles managed to produce 9.5 per game a season ago for sixth overall in the nation in the category.
Four Eagles reached double figures against NJIT as Lauryn Taylor produced a team-leading 16 points and 10 boards her first double-double of the season. Cerina Rolle emerged as a menace on the glass, corralling a team-leading and career-high 15 boards to help extend the nation’s second-longest home win streak to 33 games.
Preseason ASUN Player of the Year Emani Jefferson is averaging a team-best 13.7 points per game.
