Prince Albert RCMP say a fugitive who escaped the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert was spotted on Wednesday but evaded capture.
RCMP say prison staff noticed that Glen Fredrick Richard Halkett, 29, was missing during a prisoner count around 9:30 p.m. CST on Tuesday, Dec. 31. A warrant for his arrest was issued shortly after.
In a news release issued early Thursday afternoon, RCMP say officers were patrolling the community of Little Red River Cree Nation, about 30 kilometres north of Prince Albert, looking for Halkett at approximately 11 a.m. CST Wednesday and saw him in the driver’s seat of a vehicle outside a home.
RCMP say the officers activated their emergency lights and approached the vehicle, but Halkett accelerated and sped away, striking the side of the police vehicle as he did. RCMP say the officers were not injured, but the police vehicle was damaged.
Officers continued the search and found the vehicle, but Halkett was no longer in it, RCMP say.

Before his escape, Halkett was serving a sentence of two years and nine months for offences including breaking and entering, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 (x3), motor vehicle theft and flight from a peace officer.
Halkett has now been charged with the following:
One count of escaping lawful custody.
One count of being unlawfully at large.
One count of flight from peace officer.
One count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
One count of driving while prohibited.
Halkett is described as 5’8″ and 168 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. He has tattoos on his neck and under his left eye. Officers saw him wearing a grey or light brown toque, a hoodie and a beige jacket.
Police are warning the public not to approach Halkett. Instead, report sightings and information to police immediately.
