The 2025 Golden Globes is on its way, with Netflix’s drug-cartel musical Emilia Perez and historical epic The Brutalist leading the nominations.
This annual celebration of the year’s finest film and TV offerings isn’t just an opportunity to see the stars hit the red carpet and perhaps deliver some controversial viral moments. Now in its 82nd year, the Golden Globes are often used as an indicator as to which films might win big at the Academy Awards which usually takes place shortly afterwards.
With awards season starting to ramp up, the back end of the year is typically reserved for the heavy-hitting film releases that will no doubt become the new big contenders. Throw a bunch of ace already-released TV into the mix and the scene has been set for the 2025 Golden Globes. Here’s everything we know about it so far…
The Golden Globes will take place on Sunday, 5 January 2025, between 8pm-11pm Eastern/Pacific time. The ceremony will air on CBS and Paramount+ for US viewers.
There’s a small catch though: while the show will be available on-demand for Paramount+ users who also have the Showtime add-on, it won’t be available to those with Essential packages until the day after it airs.
Details of how viewers in the UK can watch the show have not yet been revealed — but typically, there is no way to watch the show live in the UK.
US stand-up comedian Nikki Glaser has been confirmed to host the Golden Globes 2025.
Glaser has appeared in Amy Schumer’s 2015 movie Trainwreck and on multiple celebrity roasts, firing jokes at the likes of Rob Lowe, Alex Baldwin and Tom Brady. She takes over from fellow stand-up comic Jo Key who hosted the 2024 Golden Globes ceremony, and will become the first woman to host the ceremony solo.
Speaking about her new presenting job, Glaser said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes. It’s one of my favourite nights of television and now I get a front row seat (actually, I think I have to host from the stage).
“The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film, but also for comedy. It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so). (God I hope so).
“It’s an exciting, yet challenging gig because it’s live, unpredictable, and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who also might be getting wasted while seated next to their recent exes).”
Previous stars to have hosted the Golden Globes include Saturday Night Live stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, comedian Jerrod Carmichael and The Office star Ricky Gervais.
Many familiar faces will present gongs at the 2025 Golden Globes, including music icon Elton John, Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield, The Batman’s Zoë Kravitz and Moana duo Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho.
They’ll be joined by The Substance actors Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, plus Michael Keaton, Nicolas Cage, Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot and Furiosa star Anya Taylor-Joy.
The star-studded Golden Globes presenting line-up also includes Colin Farrell, Sharon Stone, Viola Davis and Michelle Yeoh.
Netflix’s Emilia Perez leads the Golden Globe 2025 nominations with 10 nods, including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director for Jacques Audiard, and acting nominations for Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofia Gascón.
The Brutalist, which follows Adrien Brody as a Hungarian architect attempting to build a life in the US after the Second World War, scored seven nominations, and Conclave starring Ralph Fiennes as a priest who has to select a new pope, received six nods.
Anora, a film about a young sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, scored five nominations, alongside Demi Moore’s body-horror The Substance.
Wicked landed four nominations, including recognition for Ariana Grande and her British co-star Cynthia Erivo. The Wizard of Oz spin-off was shortlisted for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) alongside Emilia Perez, Anora, The Substance, romantic sports film Challengers and comedy-drama A Real Pain.
The musical also received a nod in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category with hit films including Gladiator II, Deadpool & Wolverine, Twisters, Inside Out 2 and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
