Feyenoord’s frantic 3-2 win at Girona didn’t just ignite their Champions League campaign, but also ended a 22-year wait for an away victory in the competition.
Not since the Rotterdam side secured a 1-0 win against Newcastle United in September 2002 had they returned home with three points.
In their defence, they had played just eight Champions League away games since. However, they had also lost every single one of them, as well as two qualifying games at Dynamo Kiev and Sparta Prague.
To add to the momentous nature of the night, it also ended a winless run of 11 away games across all European competitions.
The next task for the 1970 champions? Qualifying for the knockout rounds of the Champions League (post-1992). Their win against the LaLiga side certainly puts them right in the hunt.
