The man asked, “Is Indian experience irrelevant? (Photo Credit: Instagram)
Finding a job and settling abroad seems like a lucrative option to many Indians but often it comes with its own problems. A former Google employee from India is experiencing this challenge firsthand after moving to Canada. Despite having over three years of experience at Google India, he’s finding it difficult to look for a new job and survive in his current low-income job. He alleged that recruiters often prefer local candidates over international applicants. He feels frustrated that Canadian employers often overlook his Indian work-ex, or claim that he’s overqualified for the job. To improve his chances, he has even considered cutting his experience on his resume.
The video has gained the attention of many social media users and garnered nearly 2.5 lakh views. Sharing the video, Piyush Monga wrote, “Is Indian experience irrelevant? Bro has worked with Google, recruiters don’t care.”
The Google employee explained, “I work as a Process Inventory Associate. I make $17.5 since I’ve been working from past one year. You hardly make any survival with that sort of money. I’ve worked on-site with Google India for 3 plus year as a Digital Marketing Expert. But after coming here, what I’m doing right now is I’m cutting my experience because they are not counting my experience and they think that if you have experience from India, then it’s not going to count.”
He added, “It definitely doesn’t make sense because you know, you have been spent a lot of years over there and you have done a lot of things over there and you have experience from both the fields and you know, for some of the companies the reason that they’re giving me is like, ‘You’re overqualified for the job.’ I’ll start hunting jobs by cutting my experience.”
The video has received mixed comments from users. While some agree with the allegations made by the employee, some are questioning his claims.
Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “I met with a hiring manager, and he said that if he receives 100 resumes, he obviously gives priority to Canadians because he knows about Canada and can verify their experience. However, he can’t be sure if the experience from back in India is real or not, which is why they often prefer hiring Canadian candidates,” a comment read.
Another user questioned, “When FRESHER goes they want EXP. When EXP guy goes they want less EXP. What they want?”
“Indian experience does matter. However, preference might be given to the Canadian experience over others. The primary factor companies consider is cultural fit, how well you can adapt to their culture. Personally, with Indian experience, I was able to secure an internship between my two one-year courses and a job a month after finishing my education. It’s about the reach, efforts, and strategy you apply.” another user quipped.
Questioning his claims, a user said, “I do not think that’s true. If one has developed Google ads skills, any recruiter will prefer those. Not having a Canadian experience might impact his level and pay but you can get a job or atleast an internship in a year.”
One more added, “I had around 6 years of experience in India and no Canadian experience, and got a white collar job in Canada within 15 days of applying, that too when I gave all my interviews from India. I think it is all about how you convince the recruiter.”
