A garbage truck with its loader up took out multiple streetcar wires at a major downtown intersection, causing road closures on one of the city’s busiest surface transit routes Tuesday, Toronto police say.
Just after 8 a.m., the garbage truck driver struck the overhead wires while driving through King Street W. and Spadina Avenue intersection, police said in a post on X.
The garbage truck’s loader, and the bin attached to it, remained tangled in overhead wires as of mid-morning. Many of the wires were dangling down to the street, and at least one stoplight appeared to have been knocked out of place.
The intersection is now closed and police are encouraging people in the area to use alternate routes to get around. The intersection could be closed for 10-12 hours Tuesday, Toronto police spokesperson Shannon Eames said in an email.
No one was injured, police say.
Streetcars in the area are being diverted, Toronto Transit Commission spokesperson Stuart Green said in an email.
Streetcars on the 501, 504, 508, 510 and 511 lines are all being diverted due to downed lines, according to the TTC website. Buses are now supplementing service where possible. The TTC will continue to provide updates online.
