Former Big Brother star Narinder Kaur has faced a backlash for commenting on Kate Middleton‘s appearance.
The TV presenter — who features on Good Morning Britain and GB News as promoted on her social media accounts — wrote on social media platform X: “Genuine question – why has Kate aged so much? Isn’t she only 42? Is she a smoker? It’s the only explanation.”
Social media was awash with outrage from people calling out the “disgusting” remark from the TV presenter, prompting Kaur to share an apology.
This weekend the Princess of Wales continued to return to her royal duties after completing chemotherapy. She appeared on a balcony above The Cenotaph war memorial in London on Remembrance Sunday for the National Service of Remembrance.
The royal — who has never missed a Remembrance Sunday ceremony in the 13 years she has been married to Prince William — had taken a step back from her public work when it was announced in March that she was undergoing cancer treatment. Since announcing she had completed chemo, she has begun to return to work at a gradual pace.
In the wake of the backlash, Kaur has apologised for her remark causing “offence” in a video shared on social media.
Filmed in a piece to camera, she said: “I thought I’d do a quick video instead of tweet after tweet, because it becomes pretty ridiculous – as if it wasn’t ridiculous enough already. I put out a stupid tweet. That wasn’t my intention, my intention was not to be malicious or nasty or anything. I’m not like that, anybody who knows me. It was stupid to ask about the ageing. I’ve admitted that, I’ve put my hands up and apologised if it caused offence.”
She added: “The only people who were offended though, because many people on Twitter and social media have asked exactly what I’ve asked but did not receive the sexual, racial, violent abuse that I did from accounts with EDL flags, Union Jacks, disgusting abuse.”
The Big Brother star explained she was asking about ageing and it was “nothing to do with cancer at all”. She said her brother died from cancer, after going through “brutal treatment of chemo” and “worked up until weeks before he died”.
Then she commented: “She’s near enough a year off work. Of course it must take its toll… Kate does have a lot of privilege there. I’m not excusing my tweet but I’m saying you’re all mad at me.”
In the clip over four minutes, the presenter also claimed the people criticising her were “pitting Kate against Meghan”.
She said: “You exposed that what this was all about was I as a brown woman, an Indian, had the gall to criticise Kate’s appearance. I’m not going anywhere. I’m not leaving the country. I’m gonna continue. You can keep cancelling me as much as you like, but you will not silence my voice just because I’m a brown woman, and it is that, and you will never convince me otherwise.”
The Princess of Wales has been making a steady comeback to her royal duties after receiving treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer since late February behind the scenes.
The royal announced she had completed her chemotherapy treatment in September this year. Also, Kate expressed she was eager to return to work in a message on 9 September.
“Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes,” she said.
“I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.”
