Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday the construction of a 45-km bypass between Margao, the commercial capital of Goa, and the state’s border with Karnataka. In addition, he announced four-laning of the Panaji-Belgaum highway in Goa.
Gadkari was in Goa inaugurating a six-lane access-controlled road between Manohar International Airport and Dhargal in the state. In his inauguration speech, Garkari promised two new projects for the state.
The Margao-Karnataka border bypass will be around 45 km long and cost nearly Rs 3,500 crore, The four-laning of the existing Panaji-Belgaum section of National Highway 748 in Goa will cost almost Rs 4,000 crore. This will be the 52 km section of the national highway falling in Goa.
Gadkari will review the progress of the national highway projects in Goa on Friday morning with the officials, an official statement added.
In his speech, Gadkari also mentioned that Goa’s road transport should adopt alternative fuels and biofuels to reduce pollution in the state. “This initiative would be a significant benefit for the people of Goa,” he said.
On Thursday evening, the 7 km project, costing Rs 1,183 crore, was inaugurated by Union minister Gadkari.
As per the ministry, the road promises to significantly improve connectivity to Manohar International Airport, situated in Mopa, facilitating faster and hassle-free travel.
“This development is expected to enhance tourism activities and provide a boost to multi-modal connectivity, thereby reducing logistics costs,” the ministry said.
Additionally, it aims to ensure smoother and safer traffic movement, leading to savings in fuel consumption and travel time.
“Ultimately, the project is poised to stimulate overall socio-economic growth in the region, creating a positive impact on the local economy and the quality of life for residents,” the statement added.

Earlier on Thursday, News18 had reported about how the new road will ease the journey to and from the new international airport in Goa with Mumbai, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The link road, with an elevated corridor, will ease the journey for the commuters using the Mumbai-Kanyakumari National Highway 66.
National Highway 66 starts in Panvel near Mumbai and ends at Cape Comorin in Kanyakumari. It passes through Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The link road will ease the journey for the people travelling between the international airport in Goa and any of these states and even beyond.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday evening announced that they are planning to connect the Manohar International Airport to Pernem Railway Station in North Goa and improve rail connectivity across the state to ensure ease of travel for everyone.

“The Mopa Link Road is built with safety measures and environmental sustainability, providing a seamless travel experience. This corridor will serve as a gateway to the economic development of various industrial sectors in the state,” Sawant said.
He also said that over the next five years, Goa will receive between Rs 25,000 to 30,000 crore for various development projects.
