Bengaluru: Among the reforms for Common Entrance Test (CET), the govt is considering making it a computer-based test (CBT), said higher education minister MC Sudhakar Saturday. However, any decision will be taken only after considering the infrastructure availability and the proficiency of rural students. Speaking at a programme organised by Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) to distribute certificates to candidates who qualified in K-SET (Karnataka Student Eligibility Test) 2023 in Malleswaram, he said: “In Maharashtra and a couple of other states, CET is conducted in the CBT model. Computer-based conduct of CET requires more infrastructure. We’ll also have to consider whether our rural students will be comfortable with it. A final decision will be taken after taking into account the pros and cons.”A company has demonstrated the process to the govt. “However, they had proposed an end-to-end solution starting from the applications. We’ve told them we don’t need all the processes, only the exam conduct part. We’ve sought clarifications,” he said.Sudhakar acknowledged that rural students face hardship even in filing application forms, with many ending up making multiple mistakes. An app is being prepared to train students to fill the application form. It is at the final stage and will be unveiled soon.It may be recalled that online tests have been proposed several times in the past, but have never been implemented considering the infrastructural issues.
CET counselling datesThe minister said counselling dates for CET will be announced after the final order of Supreme Court on National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). However, mock allotment will be held from next week where students can make option entry and get an idea of the chance they stand. “Our final seat matrix for engineering will be ready by Monday or Tuesday. We’ll be set to start counselling anytime. We’ll start mock allotments from next week. The plan is to conduct counselling for engineering and medical courses simultaneously for the convenience of students. So, we’ll wait for the SC decision,” he said.
Streaming exams liveThe minister watched the webstreaming activities of KEA at the command centre. Adoption of artificial intelligence, facial recognition, use of fingerprints, biometrics and other technologies are the best ways to prevent exam irregularities, he said.
