Rochester Mayo was perfect in its title defense, winning every match this fall, capped by a 4-3 victory over Edina in the Class 2A championship Wednesday.
The Spartans earned it the hard way, winning a pair of 4-3 matches at Baseline Tennis Center. In their semifinal victory over fourth-seeded Maple Grove, it was a singles sweep that powered the Spartans through, with Claire Loftus, Aoife Loftus, Ana Medina and Eliana Elder taking care of business in impressive fashion. There was only one game total lost between the four of them.
The Loftus sisters and Malea Diehn won their singles bouts in the final, but Rochester Mayo had to win at least one doubles match to clinch the crown. That came at No. 1 doubles, where Medina and senior Keely Ryder emerged with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Blake 6, Litchfield 1: Blake defended its Class A title in impressive fashion, winning its three state tournament matches by an aggregate score of 20-1.
Sienna Szerda, Michelle Pham and Anya Vallapureody all notched singles wins for the top-seeded Bears, who featured just one senior in their lineup. That was Regan Brass, who combined forces with Louisa Cohen to win at No. 2 doubles.
Isla Dille won at No. 1 singles for second-seeded Litchfield.
