India Squad for Sri Lanka Series: As Gautam Gambhir begins his coaching stint with the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, all eyes will be on the team selection. News18 CricketNext has learned that the official announcement will be made on Monday, July 15 or Tuesday, July 16.
It will be interesting to see who takes over the reins of Rohit Sharma in the shortest format after he retired from the T20Is post the T20 World Cup win in the Caribbean. At the same time, there are several players in the fray to replace Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, who bowed out as well after scripting history in Barbados.
Though Rohit, Kohli and Jadeja continue to play the 50-over format, it’s yet to be seen if they travel to Sri Lanka for the 3 ODIs, scheduled to be played after the 3-match T20I series. Given a hectic Test calendar later this year, the trio might be rested from this short trip to the island nation.
On Sunday, a young Indian team led by Shubman Gill toured Zimbabwe and made a strong statement with a 4-1 series in the T20I format. With Gambhir officially announced as the head coach, the former India opener will be at the helm of affairs starting the SL series, and there could be a lot of changes to the squads, especially in the T20I squad.
