As reported by Mohamed Toubache-Ter and Foot Mercato, Julien Stéphan has been relieved of his duties as manager of Stade Rennais, whilst L’Équipe understands that Jorge Sampaoli is nearing an agreement to take over at the Breton club.
With just three wins in their first 10 games of the season, Rennes sit just one point above the relegation play-off zone. A 4-0 loss to AJ Auxerre over the weekend proved to be the final straw, and despite signing a two-year deal in March, Stéphan’s second spell at the club is set to come to an end.
With Stéphan informed of the decision on Thursday, Rennes are looking to move quickly to secure his successor. Former Olympique de Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli is the overwhelming favourite to take over. Talks are progressing quickly with Sampaoli, and he could be appointed in time for Les Rennais’ weekend fixture against Toulouse FC (Sunday, 17:00 local time), according to L’Équipe.
