Sep. 24—WATERTOWN — A late-season surge continued Tuesday for the Mitchell High School boys golf team.
Four Kernels shot rounds of 74 strokes or better, as MHS finished with a team total of 293 strokes at the Watertown Invite, checking in one stroke back of the school record. The effort also tied host Watertown for the team title at the event, hosted at Cattail Crossing Golf Course. Watertown claimed the team title tiebreaker, with the better fifth score (77 for Watertown, 87 for Mitchell) after the top-four players on each team.
Asher Dannenbring paced the Kernels, shooting an even-par 72 to finish in sixth place individually, while Everett Morrison wasn’t far behind at a 1-over 73 to tie for seventh. Carter McCormick and Sam Titze both carded 2-over 74 rounds as part of a five-way tie for ninth place. Marshall Widstrom and Brady Reiners both shot rounds of 87 to fill out Mitchell’s lineup.
Tuesday’s effort came on the heels of a 297-stroke round and third-place finish at the home Mitchell Invitational on Sept. 20. Of note, Cattail Crossing is the host course for the Class AA state championships on Oct. 7-8.
Harrisburg’s Charlie Swift’s 4-under 68 won the individual title, as Watertown’s Kaden Rylance and Rapid City Stevens’ Cole Jansen both shot 3-under 69. Rounding out the top five individual placements, Aberdeen Roncalli’s Finn Anderson and Pierre’s Nick Bothun checked in a 1-under 71.
Behind the Kernels and Arrows at 293 strokes, Pierre was four strokes back in third at 297. Harrisburg (300) was fourth and Brandon Valley (306) was fifth.
Mitchell’s next scheduled action is the Eastern South Dakota Conference championships on Monday, Sept. 30, at Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen.
