Around those close to her, Knix founder and president Joanna Griffiths is “notorious” for cutting up shapewear in an effort to make them actually invisible under the pieces in her wardrobe. After doing this for years, she and the Knix design team had an “aha” moment: What if the brand’s popular shapewear could be changed to meet certain needs?
A year and a half later, that spark of an idea has become a reality, because, today, Knix is launching a line of customizable shapewear—something the Canadian brand says is the first of its kind. Each piece in the line is made using patented technology that places various cut lines on the shapewear. Wearers can use scissors to cut along the line they want to customize things like the back area without sacrificing any support or causing the fabric to roll up.
“You get the benefit of owning this piece of shapewear that’s going to be really heavy-hitting, and then you have the bonus of being able to modify it as you wear it so that it’s invisible under more nuanced outfits,” Griffith says. “The alternative is that you go out and buy a very specific shapewear item that you might only get to wear every so often. This gives you the versatility to make decisions as you go and unlock parts of your wardrobe and let you wear more options.”
