A man is in hospital after being hit by a pickup truck that swerved off the road and ended up in a backyard pool in Whitby, police say.
The crash happened Friday just after noon in the area of Rossland Road E. and Fencerow Drive, Durham Regional Police said in a social media post.
A white Dodge Ram was traveling eastbound on Rossland Road in a residential area when it went off the roadway, struck a man walking on the side walk, crashed through a backyard fence and fell into a pool, Const. Nicholas Gluckstein said in an interview.
“This was a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Gluckstein said. “They were on the sidewalk off the roadway in the path of this vehicle when it went off the roadway.”
The pedestrian was transported to a trauma centre in Toronto with life-threatening injuries. His condition has since been upgraded to “stable but still critical,” Gluckstein said. No one else was injured.
The man driving the pickup, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, didn’t suffer any injuries.
Durham police’s collision investigation unit is investigating the circumstances that led to the crash, including whether alcohol, distracted driving or something on the road were factors.
In North York on Friday night, a vehicle hit two homes, but no one was injured. Toronto police said the vehicle was reported stolen and the occupants fled the scene on foot. The crash happened at Derrydown and Sentinel roads. Police were called to the scene at about 7:40 p.m. No suspect description was released.
