Former Glentoran boss Mick McDermott has stepped down as a Director of the Irish Premiership club by mutual agreement after being appointed manager of League of Ireland First Division side Cobh Ramblers.
McDermott left his position as manager of the Glens in January 2023 after nearly four years at the helm, having led the club to Irish Cup success in 2020.
He continued in a role as director of the Oval outfit however.
“Glentoran Football Club has announced that Mick McDermott has stepped down from his position as a Director of the club by mutual agreement,” read a statement released by the east Belfast club on Monday night.
“This decision comes following Mick’s appointment as Head Coach of League of Ireland Division One side, Cobh Ramblers.
“During his time at Glentoran, Mick made a significant contribution as both a board member and manager. He played a key role in the club’s 2019 takeover, rebuilding the club and squad, while transitioning to full-time football. His leadership was instrumental in securing Irish Cup success and achieving European qualification on two occasions.”
In his new position, McDermott replaces Paul Hunt, who left Cobh Ramblers last month after guiding them to an eighth-place finish in the First Division in his only season in charge.
The 50-year-old has also held a variety of club and international coaching positions over the past two decades, including spells in the Iran and Qatar backroom teams under former Real Madrid and Portugal manager Carlos Queiroz.
“From my first interactions with the club and community, I sensed something special,” said McDermott of the switch to Cobh Ramblers.
“I look forward to building a talented squad that will make the town proud and achieving memorable milestones for the Cobh community.
“I’m excited to work alongside a fantastic ownership group, a committed board, and the dedicated players and staff combined with the volunteers who make this club so unique.”
Cobh Ramblers chairman Bill O’Leary said McDermott’s appointment “reflects our ambition to bring world-class knowledge to our club”.
“His track record at international and club levels speaks for itself, and we are confident his expertise will elevate Cobh Ramblers,” added O’Leary.
The Cork club, where Republic of Ireland and Manchester United legend Roy Keane began his senior career, were taken over by USA-based FC32 in October.
