Syla Swords will begin her University of Michigan women’s basketball career next season as the highest-ranked recruit in program history.
The five-star guard also hopes to be an Olympic medalist before the Wolverines’ 2024-25 campaign begins in November. On Tuesday, Swords, 18, was selected as one of 12 members to represent Canada at the 2024 Olympics. She becomes the youngest player to earn a spot on Canada’s Olympic team and is just the second Olympian in Wolverines history.
The Paris Games won’t be the first time the Sudbury, Ontario native represents her country. Last summer, the 6-foot guard won bronze at the FIBA U19 World Cup and was the only high schooler named to the Canadian senior women’s national team roster for the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament, helping Canada punch its ticket in February.
Swords was ranked as the No. 4 overall recruit in the country by ESPN and was named a McDonald’s All-American. She attended Long Island Lutheran High School and was the 2024 Gatorade and MaxPreps girls player of the year in New York, averaging 17.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists and three steals per game.
She joins Krista Phillips, who played for Canada in the 2012 London Games, as the only Wolverines to make an Olympic team.
Canada is in Group B with France, Nigeria and Australia. It opens against France on July 29.
