Sep. 6—MITCHELL — A strong performance at home netted Mitchell boys junior varsity golf a top-five finish on Friday.
The Kernels came home in fifth place among the 12 teams competing in the Parkston Invite at Lakeview Golf Course, finishing with a team score of 337. Three of Mitchell’s counting scorers all posted rounds of 84 around Lakeview’s par-72 layout.
Among individual performances, Matthew Mausycki finished in 23rd place, going 43-41 en route to an 84, carding a birdie on the par-5 10th hole. Sam Titze went 42-42 to shoot an 84, finishing in 24th, and Canon Moller’s round of 84 helped him finish in 25th.
Other Kernel performances include Dawson Adams shooting an 85 to finish in 30th, and Tyler Christensen carding an 85 to finish in 32nd. Gavin Polreis came in 59th after a round of 96.
The event titles were swept by West Central, taking both the team and individual championships. In the team standings, the Trojans posted a winning score of 306 to beat Elk Point-Jefferson by three strokes. Sioux Falls Christian came in third place with a score of 315, and Lennox finished ahead of the Kernels in fourth at 330.
Individually, reigning Class A state champion Anthony Lanham recorded six birdies as the only golfer out of the field of 72 to break par, posting a 4-under 68. EPJ’s Carter Langle came in second place with a round of 1-over 73, followed by Canton’s Carson Steffensen (73), EPJ’s Ben Akin (73), and Chamberlain’s Chase McQuirk (74) to complete the top five.
Among area teams, Mount Vernon/Plankinton came in seventh with a score of 338, led by Trysten Eide’s 7-over 79. Winner (341) was eighth, as Karson Keiser shot an 81 to lead the Warriors. Parkston’s Landon Weber shot an 81 as the hosts secured a ninth-place finish (351). Chamberlain (370) came home in 11th place.
