Tariffs, climate change, labour shortages and supply chain disruptions are among the hot button issues facing agribusinesses across Western Canada and around the world.
MLT Aikins partners Samer Awadh and Chris Nyberg will share their ideas and optimism at this month’s Western Canada Economic Forum (WCEF) on January 29 and 30 at the Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina.
“I believe there’s immense potential to grow the agribusiness and food sectors in Western Canada considering the global demand for increased food production and technological advances happening every day — many in our own backyard,” says Samer, who also co-leads the firm’s agribusiness and food practice group with Chris.
“Our lawyers from across Western Canada are actively engaged with leaders in the agribusiness and food sectors as we address concerns and find solutions,” says Chris. “Over the years, we’ve amassed in-depth technical knowledge and a unique understanding of the issues and opportunities within this industry.”
Business leaders from across Canada, the U.S. and beyond will gather in Regina to discuss how a robust economy strengthens the country on the world stage, and how a strong Canadian economy can foster more growth and innovation amongst the provinces.
When it comes to opportunities in the agribusiness and food sectors sector, Samer points to innovations like automation leading to higher yields and more efficient use of resources leading to lower costs. He also points to genetic research and development, making crops more resilient to climate change, pests and disease.
“There’s a growing trend toward more sustainable farming, with Western Canada leading the way,” says Samer. “Sustainable practices like regenerative agriculture, crop rotation and no-till farming are making a difference, as well as government green technology incentives.”
Chris adds that the agri-food sector is expanding into value-added products like biofuels, processed foods and meat alternatives, which is helping to increase profit margins.
“While industry challenges exist, particularly when it comes to trade barriers, tariffs and shifting international trade agreements, there are also exciting opportunities ahead as we expand markets and diversify,” says Chris.
Samer and Chris will be joined at the Western Canada Economic Forum by other MLT Aikins partners and leaders.
