The Las Vegas Raiders‘ secondary underwent minimal change this offseason. The unit will return most of its starters from last season outside of Amik Robertson, who signed with the Detroit Lions in free agency.
Though the Raiders’ pass rush gets most of the attention and is considered the heart of the defense, the Silver and Black’s secondary quietly had a solid 2023 campaign, allowing 212.4 pass yards per game, which ranked No.12 in the NFL.
One reason the Raiders’ secondary exceeded expectations last season was the play of safety Tre’von Moehrig. The former second-round pick had a breakout campaign in 2023, posting a career-high three interceptions and 20 defensive stops.
An impressive year from Moehrig last season led to the 25-year-old receiving some votes for ESPN’s annual top-10 safety list based on the opinions of NFL coaches, scouts and executives.
Though he failed to crack the top 10 or honorable mentions, the fact that Moehrig received some votes is a compliment and shows his career-best campaign didn’t go unnoticed. If Moehrig can produce another season like the one he just did, he could find his way into the top 10 next year.
The former TCU Horned Frog is an ascending player who has missed just two games in his career through three seasons, and he posted a 68.0 coverage grade in 2023.
Moehrig is entering a contract season and will look to establish himself as a long-term piece in Patrick Graham’s defense in 2024.
