It was a busy day for the Ottawa Senators.
First, the Senators announced they have signed goalie Mads Sogaard to a two-year contract.
Then, they announced they’ve acquired forwards Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiasson from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Roby Jarventie and Ottawa’s fourth-round draft pick in 2025.
Bourgault, a former first-round draft pick (21st overall in 2021), recently completed his second professional season with the Oilers’ organization, registering 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) over 55 regular-season games with the Bakersfield Condors

Chiasson spent his first professional season with the Oilers’ organization in 2023-24 and played all but one of his 69 regular-season games with Edmonton’s ECHL affiliate, the Fort Wayne Komets, recording 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists).
Late in the afternoon, the Senators acquired a 2026 sixth-round draft pick from Colorado in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick and goaltender Kevin Mandolese.
The first year of Sogaard’s contract will pay him $775,000 if he’s in the National Hockey League or $225,000 if he’s in the American Hockey League. The second year of the contract is one way and it’s worth $775,000.
The 6-foot-7 Sogaard spent the majority of last season with the Belleville Senators. He had 18 wins in 32 games, with two shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.45 and save percentage of .916.
He also appeared in six NHL games with Ottawa and earned the 10th NHL victory of his career by turning aside 22 of 25 shots in the team’s 5-3 win at Philadelphia on Jan. 21.
“Mads’ development continues to progress,” Senators general manager Steve Staios said in a statement. “With considerable playoff experience this past spring in Belleville, in addition to a strong regular season, he was able to gain additional confidence as a professional goaltender. The upcoming season will serve as an important stepping stone for him.”
Sogaard was the Senators second second-round pick (37th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft. He enters the 2024-25 season as the B-Sens’ all-time leader in games (96) and wins (50).
