Former Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard, who faces two charges in Quebec, will undergo his preliminary hearing in Montreal this week.
Nygard, founder of a now-defunct international women’s apparel company, was charged in March 2022 with one count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement. The crimes were allegedly committed in Quebec between Nov. 1, 1997, and Nov. 15, 1998.
The identity of the alleged victim and the evidence heard in court this week at the preliminary hearing are subject to a publication ban.
Nygard, 83, will appear remotely from a federal detention facility in Ontario, where he is serving a prison sentence.
The founder of Nygard International was sentenced in Toronto last September to 11 years in prison after being found guilty of four counts of sexual assault for crimes committed between the 1980s and the mid-2000s.
Nygard also faces charges in Manitoba, and U.S. authorities have requested his extradition on the basis of a nine-count indictment filed in New York. U.S. prosecutors allege that Nygard was involved in illegal activities to sexually assault and traffic women and underage girls.
Nygard has denied all charges and is appealing his conviction and sentence in Ontario.
