The Hillcrest Ladies Golf League Women “Fore” Women golf tournament makes a return for its fifth year on August 10, 2024.
The tournament is held to support scholarships for outstanding female high school athletes and since 2019 has given out more than $23,500 to Prairie South and Holy Trinity Catholic School Division students pursuing secondary education.
This year, six $3,000 scholarships have been awarded due to the tournament’s success.
“It has done really well, and that is thanks not just to the women in the league but to our community, the sponsorship in our community has been incredible,” said Deb Negraiff, organizer in charge of scholarships.
She said that putting a spotlight on the achievements of young women in sports was the primary reason the tournament was started, citing the need for more recognition and infrastructure like that seen for male athletes.
“These young ladies not only are they strong academically, they’re athletes and they travel, they give back. They’re involved in coaching (and) in a multitude of things,” said Negraiff.
“These are some very well-rounded young women.”
As a result of the scholarship program recipients have been able to further their athletic and academic careers, attending post-secondary programs across Canada and the United States. With some travelling as far as Florida and Illinois to continue their education.
The Women “Fore” Women golf tournament takes place on August 10 at the Hillcrest Golf Course, beginning with a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start.
The 50 two-person teams hit the greens to compete in various golf challenges, with the course split into six holes of Scramble, six of Alternate Shot, and the final six being played for Best Score
Golfers will compete to win prizes for numerous golf achievements such as, closest to the pin, longest drives and putts, and closest to the line. With the reward for the lucky golfer who lands a hole-in-one being an XT4 Cadillac.
Registration for members is $100 or $120 for non-members, with a cart, a meal, and prizes included in the cost of registration.
As of the writing of this article, only 18 slots remain, and one can register to participate by contacting the Hillcrest Golf Course or by calling 306-693-1921.
