A total of 13 players have been selected from the FC Barcelona men’s and women’s football teams for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. 10 players from Barça Women and three players from Hansi Flick’s squad will form part of the Spanish squads vying for the gold medal in the football tournament during this summer’s games.
The total surpasses the previous best of six from the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics which took place in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic.
From Hansi Flick’s squad, Pau Cubarsí, Fermín López and Eric Garcia have been selected by Spain coach Santi Denia who face their first game on 24 July in the Parc des Princes against Uzbekistan.
For centre back Eric Garcia, returning from a loan spell at Girona in 2023/24, it will a second appearance at the game after claiming a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics football tournament in 2021 alongside Pedri and Oscar Mingueza.
From the Barça Women squad, Cata Coll, Jana Fernández, Irene Paredes, Ona Batlle, Aitana Bonmatí, Vicky López, Alexia Putellas, Patri Guijarro, Salma Paralluelo and Mariona Caldentey have all been selected by Spain coach Montse Tomé.
The women’s Olympic tournament begins on 25 July with the final on 10 August. The initial 26 women squad will be whittled down to 18 plus four reserves in time for the start of the Olympic Games.
