Trainer Danny Gargan was fined $1,000 for yelling at Saratoga stewards from the winners’ circle phone after the Schuylerville Stakes.
Gargan trains Complexion, who was fractious in the gate, including unseating rider John Velazquez twice according to the Equibase chart for the race. She was in range of the early pace, but weakened to cross the wire seventh, 13 3/4 lengths behind The Queens M G. The fine was reported by David Grening of Daily Racing Form.
The decision has not yet been posted to
the New York State Gaming Commission rules database, which as of
Saturday morning only had rulings as recent as July 8.
According to the report, Complexion came out of the race sound. Gargan told DRF that he should have been fined for cursing at stewards, but was concerned about the situation from a safety perspective and would have rather seen his horse scratched than have her be allowed to race after acting up behind the gate.
Complexion had been bet down to the 5-2 second favorite in the 11-horse Schuylerville field on the strength of a 6 1/2-length maiden victory at Belmont on June 14. She is a Complexity half-sister to Jack Christopher, a Grade 1-winning sprinter at ages 2 and 3.
