The No. 1 player in the world is going to help bring back golf. Rory McIlroy is one of the four golfers who will take part in a charity golf match at Seminole Golf Club in Florida on May 17.
The event — TaylorMade Driving Relief — will feature McIlroy and Dustin Johnson teaming up against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff. It will feature a $3 million purse — provided by UnitedHealth Group —which will go to the American Nurse Foundation and CDC Foundation. McIlroy and Johnson’s team will be playing for the American Nurse Foundation. Fowler and Wolff will play for the CDC Foundation. On top of that, Farmers Insurance will donate $1 million to Off Their Plate, an organization that provides meals to frontline healthcare workers.
The golfers — and the event staff — will follow social distancing guidelines during the event, which fans will not be allowed to attend the event.
Broadcasters, including Mike Tirico, will call the event off site. Two on-course reporters — Jerry Foltz and Steve Sands — will be at the Seminole Golf Club covering the event.
The charity match will be one of the first sporting events to return to television amid the coronavirus pandemic. The UFC is slated to hold fights May 9, May 13 and May 16, but most other sports in the United States have been postponed due to the virus. Both the NBA and Major League Baseball are still working on restarting their seasons. The NFL held a virtual draft in April, and is planning to proceed as usual for the regular season.
