Legendary’s upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie may have recently lost its directors, but that isn’t stopping distributor Sony Pictures from moving ahead with a release date.
In an update sent to IGN, Sony Pictures confirmed that the new Street Fighter movie is now slated to release on March 20, 2026. No other information about the movie was revealed.
Despite the release date, there are still plenty of question marks around the new film, which is being co-developed along with Capcom. The project reportedly lost directors Danny and Michael Philippou due in part to a scheduling conflict, and no details about the script or the cast have been revealed.
Whatever form it takes, the new film will try and improve on Street Fighter’s legendarily bad live-action track record, which includes the infamous (but delightful) movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late Raul Julia. There’s also 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which may be even worse. One way or another, improving on these films is a fairly low bar to clear.
In the meantime, video game adaptations continue to be all the rage in Hollywood. Numerous projects are currently in development, including a recently announced Uncharted sequel. Another Mortal Kombat film is likewise in development and is currently expected to release in 2025.
