Sophia Donnecke from Victoria is the winner of the Female Pro Open Division this year, held at Raptors Knoll Disc Golf Park in Aldergrove at the end of June.
She was among 457 players who competed in the annual BC Open disc golf tournament, with both professionals and amateurs from across B.C., Alberta, Washington State, Oregon, and Montana to compete, said tournament director Craig Sheathers.
“We were very pleased to present the 2024 BC Open over the Canada Day long weekend. The weather was perfect for the event,” he said.
While player numbers were slightly down compared to last year, the sport has still seen significant growth, Sheathers explained.
“Before the pandemic there would have been 250 players. Across the world, disc golf has become a very fast growing sport,” he said.
Chandler Fry from Washington State took first place at the BC Open.
On their website, players commended Sheathers and other organizers for their efforts to hold a smooth tournament and for the great experience.
“I want to thank everyone for being in great spirits all weekend, and it was exciting to see so many close finishes including one playoff for first,” Sheathers said.
The BC Open will return again next year.
