Cavaliers player Tristan Thompson is under fire for breaking an unwritten rule in last night’s game against the Raptors.
Thompson stirred up controversy when he decided to dunk with just four seconds remaining in the shot clock, in the already blowout game. The Cleveland Cavaliers ended up winning the game 131-108.
His decision didn’t sit well with the Raptors team. As players prepared to leave the court, Raptors players Jamal Shead and Scottie Barnes confronted the Canadian NBA veteran, prompting a heated exchange. The tension spilled over, drawing loud boos from Scotiabank Arena as coaches, officials, and teammates stepped in to separate the trio.
Raptors head coach Darko Rajaković had some thoughts on the exchange.
“I think what Tristan did there was no class and disrespectful. I’m not gonna stand for that, for sure. I’m really glad that our guys, our players from Jamal, he was on the court, and Scottie and everybody else, they stood up for themselves. I love when my team stands up for themselves. That was no class,” Rajaković said.
Fans have also gone to social media to express their thoughts on Thompson’s choice to dunk in the final seconds of the game.
“I wish Tristan Thompson did not go for that dunk at the end of the game while Toronto’s defense was just standing around waiting for the clock to run out. The Cavs were up by over 20 points. That was a punk move. I don’t blame Toronto for being upset after that,” one user on X commented.
“That was rude of him to disrespect his hometown team,” another user said on Instagram.
“You only do this if you’re the losing team, not if you’re winning. Unwritten basketball rule. Disrespect,” another user chimed in.
“Even his teammates were embarrassed. Sad too that he’s Canadian and did it to the only Canadian team. People will lose a lot of respect for him for doing that if he had any respect from across the league,” someone else commented on Instagram.
The Raptors are set to play the Miami Heat at Scotiabank Arena on Friday, February 21.
