The creators of Toronto-based Canadian label Smythe, known for its brazen use of colours and prints, were particularly drawn to the warmth of a plum thread that ran through many of the fabrics they selected this season. “This shade is bold yet sophisticated, providing versatility for both daytime and evening looks,” says co-designer Andrea Lenczner. “The red pieces embody a sense of sophisticated celebration and joy.”
Even labels known for sticking to a neutral palette are experimenting with red these days—consider it a revolt against the ubiquitous quiet-luxury movement, a trend that saw many shying away from colour in favour of an all-neutral-everything ethos. At Danish brand Herskind, designer Birgitte Herskind says she introduced red trousers, knits and dresses this season after spotting a woman wearing a red coat in the streets of Copenhagen. “I think using red for minimalist styles added some excitement to the collection,” she says of her foray into the fire.
The colour is also trending on TikTok, where posts high-lighting the styling potential of oxblood are serving up a wealth of winter-fashion inspiration. Similar to the plum embraced by Lenczner and Christie Smythe, burgundy offers a fresh take on a holiday classic that feels just as festive as its candy cane counterpart. “Deep red carries a timeless elegance that resonates during the holidays,” says Smythe. “It’s a colour that symbolizes vibrancy, courage and passion. It truly captures our intent for the season.”
